CONSERVATION AND REVITALIZATION OF A LANDMARK BUILDING AT HISTORICAL AREAS IN BANDUNG Design Case Study: Hotel Swarha Bandung

The city of Bandung has many historic old buildings that function as place icon or landmarks. The emergence of new visual elements has threatened and disrupted the function of old buildings as these landmarks. Some of the landmark buildings have been lost and replaced with new buildings, covered by new buildings or newer landmarks, and some are still intact standing but next to that newer landmarks. This condition is experienced by a number of old landmark building in the city of Bandung, including the building of the Hotel Swarha. The current condition of Hotel Swarha has been degraded and neglected. One of them is due to the closure of the building facade by part of the Masjid Raya Bandung’s building which also simultaneously took over the functions of Hotel Swarha building as a landmark. This certainly distorts the space and visual quality that was once owned by Hotel Swarha building as a landmark. Therefore, this condition needs to be raised and responded because it can be an interesting image of the preservation, utilization, optimization, and development of historic buildings that actually mark the old city area of Bandung. This thesis raises the case of Hotel Swarha where this building used to have a strong role as a place icons or landmark that is no longer present, then re-emerge its potential through design simulations. The steps taken are through conservation and then refined through revitalization steps to produce Hotel Swarha buildings that are able to respond contemporary or present conditions and needs.
