Summary: | Leather industry is a leading commodity from the Sukaregang, Garut Regency. This industry is categorized into the mainstay industry in National Industrial Development Master Plan for 2015 - 2035. It has a high economic value and has a positive impact on the economy of citizens and local governments. However, there are innumerable environmental losses from leather production waste. This research was conducted to find solutions to the problem of tannery wastewater. Specifically, the aims of this research are to design a wastewater treatment system and make plan to manage wastewater in Sukaregang Garut.
The study was conducted in one of the tannery factories and Sukaregang Leather Industry Center, Garut. Data obtained as primary data and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through observation, wastewater sample testing, experiment, and semi-structured interviews. Interviewees were Garut Environment and Parks Institution (DLHP Garut) and the Indonesian Garut Tanner Association (APKI Garut). Secondary data, such as environmental conditions and tanners condition were obtained from the two institutions. Data analysis included wastewater treatment system efficiency analysis, environmental analysis, and stakeholder analysis. Based on this analysis, a wastewater management plan is determined using an analytical thinking approach. The results showed sedimentation and adsorption methods are for the tannery wastewater treatment system. The plan recommendations are included initiating the formation of institutions or teams as research and support centers, implementing waste treatment systems that are appropriate to the needs of fabric and increasing collaboration among related institutions.
