TREE VEGETATION CHARACTERISTICS AS A SUPPORTING FACTOR FOR GREEN PEAFOWL HABITAT IN BALURAN NATIONAL PARK, EAST JAVA
A study based on the tree vegetation stands characteristics in the Javan green peafowl’s (Pavo muticus muticus Linnaeus 1766) natural habitat is required to introduce the bird to a new habitat in order to develop its population. Baluran National Park (TNB) can be considered a habitat reference. This...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/43290 A study based on the tree vegetation stands characteristics in the Javan green peafowl’s (Pavo muticus muticus Linnaeus 1766) natural habitat is required to introduce the bird to a new habitat in order to develop its population. Baluran National Park (TNB) can be considered a habitat reference. This research aims to obtain primary information regarding tree characteristics as the Javan green peafowl’s habitat support in TNB. The location of this research is in the Bekol Savanna area with a study area of 125 hectares, spanning within a week from 1st until 8th April 2019. The method used to illustrate green peafowl habitat’s tree profile is profile diagram, utilizing a plot that measures 20x60, with a number of 10 plots. The data retrieved in every plot consists of the species of tree, tree height, diameter, coordinates, tree architecture model, height and width of crown. Results show that the average tree height in all 10 plots are 11,05 ± 3,042 meters, the tallest tree being gebang (Corypha utan) which measures up to 24 meters. The average height of the tallest trees in each plot measures 15,9 ± 5,22 meters. The tree stands averagely are categorized in the C stratum/level. Furthermore, green peafowls require a habitat with a moderate (40-70%) to sparse (<40%) canopy cover to support its sheltering and resting behaviour. Green peafowls tend to prefer trees with Scarone, Roux, Holltum and Troll tree architecture model as their roosting site. text |
