Summary: | Javan green peafowl (Pavo muticus muticus Linnaeus, 1766) is one of the avifauna that is spread in Southeast Asia, including Java in Indonesia. At present, the existence of javan green peafowl is threatened due to habitat loss and poaching, so conservation efforts are needed. One important component that must be available for javan green peafowl is food as a basic need for survival. Therefore, research on vegetation that is eaten by javan green peafowl is needed as an effort to develop populations in their natural habitat. The study was conducted using vegetation analysis methods using the multilevel plot with a purposive sampling methods in Savana Bekol area of 125 hectares, with a total of 31 plots. A multilevel plot of 20 x 20 m is used for trees habitus, 10 x 10 m is used for poles, 5 x 5 m is used for saplings and shrubs, and 2 x 2 m, is used for seedling and herbs. The results showed that there were 43 species of vegetation and 22 of them were javan green peafowl’s food vegetation, consisting of 5 trees, 3 shrubs, and 14 herbs. Tree vegetation that is consumed are dominated by Mimbo (Azadirachta indica) and Widoro (Ziziphus mauritiana) with Important Value Index (INP) respectively 62.97% and 36.47%, for shrubs that consumed are dominated by Tarum (Indigofera sumatrana) and Saliara (Lantana camara) with INP respectively 104.7% and 5.8%, and the herbs that is consumed are dominated by Rayapan (Brachiaria reptans) and Selasih (Ocimum americanum) with INP respectively 42.23% and 35.22%. Food characteristic of javan green peafowl are plant parts from seeds with size ranging from 0.5 – 3 mm, fruits with size ranging from 10 – 30 mm, flowers with size ranging from 1 – 9 mm, and a leaf buds. The level of diversity of vegetation types for trees, shrubs, and herbs life forms is categorized as moderate, indicated by Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’) for trees, shrubs, and herbs in a row of 2.23; 1.28; and 2.54. This research is expected to be a reference feed for pre-introduction of javan green peafowl in another areas. |
