The existence of erosion on the river bank that has implications for silting and inundation of the surrounding area indicates the river bank tends to be less stable. This study aims to determine the stability of river banks based on soil shear strength, characteristics of vegetation roots, and river physical parameters. The soil shear strength test was carried out at three different locations namely, Ficus racemose, Inocarpus fagifer, and Cerbera manghas. Root characteristic parameters measured were Root Anchor Index, Root Grip Index, root architecture, and root length density. Retrieval of river physical data is carried out directly by taking measurements in the field. Based on the research results, IJA and ICA values for the three tree species (Loa, Gayam and Bintaro) were 0.02, 0.09 and 0.0 (IJA) and 0.33, 0.09 and 0.4 (ICA), respectively. This shows that the IJA and ICA values of the three tree species are in the low category (<0.1 and <1.5) with the heart root architecture type. Root length density values for species of Loa, Gayam and Bintaro were 0.37 cmxcm?³, 0.17 ³ and 0.26 ³, while the value of soil shear strength was 22.62 kPa (Loa), 20.37 kPa (Gayam) and 20.72 kPa (Bintaro). Statistical test results show that there is a relationship between root length density and soil shear strength very closely (R = 0.893). Statistical test results indicate that the physical characteristics of the river do not significantly influence the soil shear strength (f = 0.301 with ?> 0.05). It can be concluded, in general the Winong River cliff is classified as unstable, indicated by the ineffective vegetation in holding the river bank. text
