The Production of Protein and Chlorophyll by Chlorella vulgaris Using Anaerobically Digested Dairy Manure Wastewater (ADDMW) using Lab-scale Photobioreactor

Chlorella vulgaris is a eukaryotic, unicellular green microalgae that can contain protein up to 50% of its dry weight. However, the cultivation does not yet look promising because of high operational costs due to expensive medium price. As an alternative for an expensive growth medium, in this resea...

However, the cultivation does not yet look promising because of high operational costs due to expensive medium price. As an alternative for an expensive growth medium, in this research we cultivate C. vulgaris using anaerobically digested dairy manure wastewater (ADDMW) which is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus content. Dairy manure is relatively abundant in Indonesia’s rural areas. Our aim is to utilize manure for biogas production and its residue in the form of ADDMW can be used as growth media to cultivate C. vulgaris which potentially can be extracted to produce protein and chlorophyll. By doing this environmental problem caused by manure pollution in the river can be reduced. The cultivation of C. vulgaris in the ADDMW médium in lab-scale photobioreactors was able to produce protein levels of 5% and 35% mg/g dry weight for cultivation in 14 and 28 days. Cultivation of C. vulgaris in ADDMW for 14 days was also able to produce chlorophyll content 34.62% ?g/mL, which indicate the potential of chlorophyll as an important bioproduct in this operating condition. Growing C. vulgaris in the ADDMW médium is also able to reduce PO4-P, NH4-N and NO3-N levels in ADDMW by 45.95%, 78.24%, and 17.38% respectively, therefore it can improve the quality of wastewater before being discharged into the environment. text
