COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF INDONESIAN SOILS CONTROLLED BY DEGREE OF SATURATION AND INDEX PROPERTIES

In conventional procedure, soil compaction is controlled by maxmium dry density (?d)max and optimum moisture content (w)opt from laboratory testing in certain energy level. But in site or construction field, energy of compaction and soil type are varied so it is difficult to give a proper soil compa...

But in site or construction field, energy of compaction and soil type are varied so it is difficult to give a proper soil compaction evaluation. Optimum degree of saturation defined as Sr when (?d)max obtained. In this case, (Sr)opt has independent behaviour as it does not depend on compaction energy level (CEL) and soil type so it can be used practically. The climate of Indonesia is almost entirely tropical, that condition makes Indonesian soil has its own compaction characteristics. The range of (Sr)opt for Indonesian soils is unique. California Bearing Ratio (CBR) as one of properties of compacted soil also can be correlated with (?d)max and (Sr)opt which is useful for practical activity. Based on compaction proctor and Atterberg Limit test of Indonesian soils, the equation for various CEL between (?d)max and plasticity index is required. From these equation the value of (?d)max in certain CEL can be obtained just from knowing the soil’s PI. text
