Study of Application Room Conditioning with Earth to Air Heat Exchanger System in Bandung City

Indonesia has a high consumption level of electricity for air conditioning, because of its hot climate. As much as 24.7% of total electricity consumption is used for room cooling. Alternative method have been developed to reduce electricity consumption such a ground source cooling system. The method...

As much as 24.7% of total electricity consumption is used for room cooling. Alternative method have been developed to reduce electricity consumption such a ground source cooling system. The method of ground source cooling system has been widely used in countries with subtropics and cold climate, but there are no studies on its application in the tropics. In this final project will discuss the application of ground source cooling system at Bandung. Study on the ground source cooling system using earth to air heat exchanger (EAHE) was conducted in Bandung using analytical method for calculating performance of EAHE such as temperature decreasing, cooling load, and coefficient of performance (COP) and CFD simulation to sees effect of cooling on room. The results obtained at EAHE can reduce air temperature in the range of 28–31? to approach the ground temperature which is 24?, but the difference in temperature values decreases with increasing air velocity and reducing the length of the pipe used. The maximum and minimum COP values are 9 at air flow rate of 0.1 kg/s and 2 at a air flow rate of 0.3 kg/s. In addition, the effects that occur in the room used for cooling can reduce the temperature to 4.5? on air flow rate of 0.3 kg/s. From these results can be concluded that the use of EAHE in Bandung City has the potential for electricity savings in air conditioning system. However, it needs to be continuously developed to find the configuration that can be used for maximum savings. text
