RESEARCH OF KEJAWEN'S COLORS IN INTERIOR: CASE STUDY OF PLATARAN KEDHATON KRATON YOGYAKARTA

As a natural phenomenon, color has relatively close appertain to the majority of human life, hence nowadays color has its own position in design considerations in the field of architecture and interior. Whilst it is known that color still not a major elemnt in the work process and the final result of a building establishment since old times, the existence of color in the architectural-interior context can be engineered to be one of the mediums of harmony between functions, values, and aesthetics of space. In the esoteric knowledge of kejawen, color has become a media to symbolize many of kejawen’s teaching concepts, thus consistently appear in the texts and are used in a variety of artifacts and objects in cultural activities, yet topics about the use of color as a symbol to convey the good values or forms of cultural identity in traditional buildings are rarely found. To find patterns in the use of kejawen’s colors as a symbol of cultural teachings, a study was carried out on the traditional Javanese building in the Kedhaton complex, Kraton Yogyakarta. Four colors that have strong connections with kejawen’s teaching is found from the case study namely white, red, yellow, and black. Bangsa Kencana was chosen as a model for organizing the colors in building that match the colors that are consistently used in the symbolization of kejawen’s teaching. Furthermore, the color list is associated with a symbolic interpretation in the analysis process to produce meaning patterns and suggestions for the use of kejawen’s colors in interior.
