Adherence to inhalation therapy is one of the key factors for the successful treatment of respiratory diseases including COPD. However, medication adherence in COPD patients is generally poor, the level of adherence to various treatment regimens is around 50%. The use of effective inhalers requires the right inhalation technique to obtain an optimal therapeutic effect. Yet, several studies have shown that 50-80% of patients failed to use their inhaler device correctly. Worsening scores of COPD Assessment Test (CAT) can indicate that the patient has an exacerbation not reported to a health professional or it could be an indication that the the patient has stopped or does not take medication sufficiently. Evaluation on the technique of inhaler use and adherence to medication is, therefore, required. This study was conducted to find the effect of pharmacist counseling intervention on adherence, inhaler technique and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores in COPD patients at Dr. H. A. Rotinsulu Pulmonary Hospital in Bandung. This research was conducted in 82 subjects using experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The analysis was carried out using the non-paramertic Willcoxon rank test with a significance level of 5%. The results showed statistically significant differences in adherence, inhaler technique and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores before and after counseling intervention (p<0.05), which indicate that counseling by pharmacist can improve adherence, inhaler technique and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores in COPD patients. text
