| Summary: | Urban lifestyle raises the phenomenon of public spaces privatization where middle-upper class people were more interested in the use of public spaces such as malls, cafes, coffee shops, and others as a third place to gather, even though the best third place is public spaces. This research case study chooses Alun-Alun Cicendo, which is a park that built above an abandoned land revitalization. This place becoming a space for people's interaction in dense residential areas. This study aims to determine the role of Alun-Alun Cicendo which is a public open space as a third place referring to the literature of Oldenberg (1989), Vos (2017) and Carmona (2010). Data collection was carried out through interviews with 100 visitors to Alun-Alun Cicendo and field observations. The study was conducted by combining quantitative and qualitative methods to produce comprehensive findings.
The results showed that Alun-Alun Cicendo has an important role in responding to the need for spaces to interact in the middle of dense settlements with low income. Alun-Alun Cicendo becomes an inclusive third place by bringing together various generations ranging from children, adolescents to the elderly to be able to interact in the same space. The presence of these regular visitors creates a character for Alun-Alun Cicendo, a third place with sports activities as a medium to get a variety of interactions, including interactions with new people. Alun-Alun Cicendo as a third place then plays an ambiguous role because it accommodates sports activities that are part of a person's individual and private needs but are combined with the social life needs of a person to interact and performed in public places. On the other hand, the existence of wi-fi facilities apparently has no effect on direct interaction so its presence in public spaces needs to be reconsidered. Alun-Alun Cicendo also showed that the design of space facilities is crucial to encourage interaction in the third place supported by attractive designs as an initial impression to welcome visitors who came. |
