Aside from being applied in the field of science and technology, smart materials have also been used by designers. Smart textiles are the textile version of smart materials. The existence of smart textiles has provided opportunities for designers to explore further the connection made between humans and the product they use. The rapid development of fashion opens up more opportunities for fashion designers to discover various types of culture in the society. Applying batik in fashion design is one of the ways to promote local identity. Batik pagi sore, characterized by the two distinguish motifs or often two different colors on a single piece of fabric, could be used as an inspiration to create innovative and attractive fashion products. This character of batik pagi sore holds a unique story that can be featured as the main concept of smart textiles-based ready-to-wear fashion products. Smart textiles used in this process of design is in the form of photochromic material. This type of material reversibly changes colour when it is exposed to sunlight or UV light. Photochromic threads are applied on batik fabric using embroidery techniques. By exploring further the concept of batik pagi sore using various types of embroidery technique applied on batik fabric, more results with different visuals on the fabric could be achieved. text
