Description
Summary:Avocado seed (Persea americana Mill) waste is abundant in Indonesia. Total production of avocados currently has reached 334,047 tons in 2017. So far, only the flesh of avocados are used for consumption, this results waste from avocado seeds to accumulate with low utilization. In fact, avocado seed extract contains flavonoids and tannins which can be used as natural dyes for textiles. Meanwhile, modest fashion based on eco-fashion using textiles is still underdeveloped, especially in modest couture, even though this is a huge opportunity. Global Muslim consumers have spent US $ 270 billion in 2017 to fulfill their modest fashion needs and Muslim consumers are expected to spend US $ 361 billion to meet their modest fashion needs in 2023. This study aims to find how far avocado seed waste can be utilized on textiles through experiment to get the best natural dye formula and motif based on the customers preferency. This is used as the reference in developing modest couture porducts based on eco-fashion by utilizing avocado seed waste. This research methodology uses quantitative and qualitative (mixed-methods) approach and more towards quantitative methods. Quantitative methods are carried out through experiments with kind of fabric as dependent variable, the color result as independent variable, and time and mordant as moderator variables, also to know the effect of different techniques in creating motifs. Qualitative methods are carried out through literature studies including natural dyes, textile materials, avocados, couture, and modest fashion, which are used to find out the basics in the application natural dyes extract on textiles, and designing modest couture products. This research proves that the extract of avocado seeds resulting in reddish-brown colors, the longer the fabric is dyed, the darker the colors will be, and different kinds of mordant affect the color results. The use of post-modanting method with the addition of vinegar as mordant causes the colors of the dyed silk turns lighter. At the same time, the use of whiting as mordant turns the colos darker. The use iron as mordant changes all the color to the same dark color. All treatments using avocado seed extract both without mordant or with mordants produce unfade colors. v Furthermore, this study proves that silk fabrics with natural dyes from avocado seed extracts without and with mordant can produce environmentally friendly Modest Couture clothing that customers are interested in. Therefore these products can be used as an alternative in increasing modest fashion market opportunities, especially modest couture. This research is expected to increase the knowledge in the fields of chemistry, economics, textile and fashion in developing the modest couture business.
