Description
Summary:Mining activities are processes of extracting coal or valuable deposits from the earth's sub surface. These activities can cause the exposure of rock and form acid mine drainage. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is water with low pH (pH <4.5), has high acidity, high sulfate and metal content which is formed due to oxidation of sulfide minerals by the air and accompanied by the presence of water. The negative impact of acid mine drainage is damaging the surrounding environment. One of preventing method of acid mine drainage formation is blocking the presence of sulfide minerals, water and air. Oxygen can be prevented to enter overburden by increasing the value of moisture content so that the value of oxygen content is reduced. The study about the behavior of water and oxygen on overburden material is needed to determine the relationship between them as a prevention of acid mine drainage formation. This study uses a laboratory scale column filled with overburden material and silica sand as a control variable and measure the moisture content and oxygen content per selected depth. Infiltration test results showed that the value of moisture content and oxygen content are inversely proportional. Moisture content and oxygen content at a depth of 15 cm were 99.91% and 2.63%, 30 cm depth were 99.62% and 0.38%, 45 cm depth were 99.23% and 0.3 % and 60 cm depth were 99.86% and 0.06%.
