Summary: | The research area is held in Sarolangun Regency, Jambi Province, west of Bukit Duabelas National Park. Geologically, the research area belongs to South Sumatra Basin. This study used 24 shale samples for organic geochemical analysis, 16 shale samples for XRD analysis, six shale samples for SEM analysis, and five samples for organic petrography analysis. All samples are outcrop samples. The formations studied were three, Gumai Formation, Talangakar Formation, and Lahat Formation. Geochemical analysis has been carried out to determine the quantity, quality, and maturity of the source rock. XRD and SEM analysis were done to determine the value of brittleness index (BI). Organic petrography analysis was carried out to determine the depositional environment. The results of geochemical analysis showed that the Gumai Formation has TOC 1.45-2.67%; kerogen type II and III; immature to early mature. The Talangakar Formation has TOC of 0.97-7.93%; kerogen type I, II, and type II/III; immature to early mature. The Lahat Formation has TOC 1.57-4.39%; kerogen type II and III, and immature. The value of BI Gumai Formation is 49.46%; Talangakar Formation 55.20%; and Lahat Formation 47.25%. The depositional environment of the Gumai Formation is open sea, the Talangakar Formation is transition – open sea, and the Lahat Formation is terrestrial. Based on the comparative results of shale gas geological characteristics of North American and Sichuan Basin, the formations are potential to be the source rock for but less for the level of maturity (low).
