Summary: | In recent years, there are rising number of children population with autism. This occurrence also applies in Indonesia. Although the cause is still within debate, this number cannot be ignored. According to the Indonesian law, autistic children also have the right to education. However, the problem is there are no codes for building education facilities exclusively for them. Since autism is a unique condition, there might be some requirement that should be applied exclusively in the Special Need School.
Researchers conducted theoretical studies relating to aspects of architecture that have been studied previously and draw conclusions. Based on the conclusions, there are several aspects that will affect children in the learning process at school. Of all, it was concluded that the acoustics of the class were the most important. This conclusion then becomes a stepping stone to discuss the importance and discuss the soundproof aspects in the classroom at the Special Needs School such as the Pelita Hati School.
This school was built to accommodate those with special needs, most of whom have autism. However, the school was once a residential building and the interior was approved to be a school. At the beginning of this study, no soundproofing element was applied in the classroom. Through this research two classrooms were discussed, one with soundproof intervention and the other is not implemented. Datas are student reports written by the teacher and therapist which was recorded and taken before and after the intervention. The results showed that the installation of the material had an impact on students. However, this change does not always seem to be positive in the movement of student grades. This affects other aspects that affect students, such as color, texture and lighting. Good and planned design will make it easier for schools to achieve the goals of schools which is to prepare autistic students who are ready to attend public schools. |
