Description
Summary:Printmaking artwork has a particular feature along with its plural nature, and it can be duplicated or multiplied through a unique process. The particularity of the process of work also presents the uniqueness of the formation of a matrix, or the printing reference plate which is used to duplicate artwork with identical level of similarity, which is also known as the 'edition'. Unfortunately, the particularity is not treated as part of the visual elements in the presentation of the artwork, instead, it only used as mere technical data. Even though printmaking artworks are usually printed in certain number of sheets, they are presented singly. Based on these conditions and phenomena, the author tries to utilize and develop the particularity of the multiplication in the printing process into a visual element that is also presented as a complete work of art by referring to convention theory and graphic definitions so that the artworks produced by the author is still within the principles of the printmaking art. The development of this printing method is carried out by the intention to change the concept of creating “editions' to the creation of 'series' artworks. The author defines the “series” artworks as the creation of sheets of artwork formed on a single particular theme, partly are produced by the same matrix, but with a flattening composition of each printed matrix, resulting in a different image on each printed sheet. The reading of each sheet does not have to be sequential, so that each sheet can be interpreted in multiple interpretations. This multiplication plays the conception of diversity, because one side of the matrix produces a diversity of images on each sheet of printmaking, but also has the same nature in other respects. Outside of technical matters, the author has also chosen the theme 'conflict' as the content of the work. So that the work produced is not only about the matters of technical development, but also presenting content as the consideration in appreciating printmaking artwork. In addition, the author will use five reflections from Setiawan Sabana's eight points of thought in criticizing the current development of printmaking arts. The five points of contemplations were chosen because they are considered to still have a strong connection with the current state of the printmaking arts and are an entry point for authors to be able to develop new printing methods in accordance with the referred contemplations
