DESIGN OF EXPANDABLE BABY’S CLOTHING WITH BIDIRECTIONAL PLEATS TECHNIQUE

Babies from early birth to 2-year-old have a very rapid growth. This makes parents have to buy 5 sizes of clothing in their 2 years of birth. Moreover, the growth and development of babies can be hampered if they wear too tight or too loose clothing because it can disrupt children's motor sk...

This makes parents have to buy 5 sizes of clothing in their 2 years of birth. Moreover, the growth and development of babies can be hampered if they wear too tight or too loose clothing because it can disrupt children's motor skill movements. The impact also occurred in the world’s clothing industry. The clothing industry is the industry that produces the most waste and pollution in the world. Therefore, this study aims to design expandable baby garment that can be used by babies from 3 months to 2 years old based on the anatomy of the baby's body with pleated techniques on the garments. Expandable is an abbreviation of able to grow that can be used in the long run. This study uses an experimental method in which the durability of two-way pleats is tested on several fabric samples with semi-synthetic fibres because pleats have weak resistance on fabrics with natural fibres while, a good resistance to fabrics with synthetic fibres. On the other hand, baby's skin is still very sensitive so they will not feel safe and comfortable when wearing clothes with synthetic fibres because these fibres cause heat and cannot absorb liquids such as sweat fluids. In the analysis of determining the number of pleats, anatomical data analysis was carried out through each standard size of baby’s garments from baby of 3 months to 2 years old. The analysis aims to determine the direction and amount of growth changes of each part of the baby's body to determine the number of pleats needed to be applied and designed on the baby’s garment. Thus, this baby garment is designed with a two-way pleated technique so that clothing can stretch horizontally (x) and vertically (y) with a number of different pleated expansions because the growth of the baby is not parallel. The type of pleats used is accordion pleats for horizontal direction (x) and knife pleats for vertical direction (y). Hence, at the end of analytical the measurement needed to calculate the amount of the pleats are just the changes from the smallest which is the size of 3 months old and the biggest size which is 2 years old measurement text
