Therapy to eradicate Helicobacter pylori uses combination of several antibiotics such as clarithromycin, tetracycline and metronidazole. However, research in several countries shows that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori resistance to metronidazole, clarithromycin and tetracycline are 85%, 10% and 7.5%, respectively (Savoldi et al. 2018, Datta et al. 2005). This research was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of turmeric extract, propolis extract and its combination to 5 types of Helicobacter pylori strains, namely strains KPG 22, PTK 20, MKS 47, SMS 15 dan SBY 137. This study began with screening tests for antibacterial activity using the diffusion method then continued with determining the MIC and MBC by the microdilution method. After that the effect of the combination of extract with clarithromycin and metronidazole was tested using the checkerboard method. Propolis extract has MIC value in the range 1024 - 8192 µg/mL, turmeric extract has MIC value in the range 1024 - 2048 µg/mL while the combination of turmeric : propolis extract has MIC value in the range 512 : 256 to 1024 : 512 µg/mL. Based on the MIC of propolis extract, turmeric extract and turmeric - propolis extract, it can be concluded that the combination of turmeric - propolis extract has an additive effect. Propolis extract has MBC value in the range of 2048 - 16384 µg/mL, turmeric extract has MBC value in the range of 1024 - >32768 µg/mL while the combination of turmeric : propolis extract has a MBC value in the range of 512 : 256 to 2048 : 1024 µg/mL. Based on the value of MBC, turmeric-propolis extract has stronger antibacterial activity rather than the propolis extract and turmeric extract. The combination of propolis extract with clarithromycin and metronidazole showed an additive effect.
