The advantages of fast disintegrating tablet are being convenient for patients with difficulties in swallowing and give a rapid effect with a pleasant taste that is acceptable for patients. The purpose of this study was to develop formula of fast disintegrating tablet containing verapamil hydrochloride. The masking of bitter taste of verapamil hydrochloride was carried out by using combination of solid dispersion formation method with addition of flavoring agent and sweeteners. The solid dispersion was made by using sodium starch glycolate and croscarmellose sodium as carriers with ratio of 1:1 and 1:2 while the flavoring agent used was menthol and the sweeteners used were sucralose, aspartame, and mannitol in various concentrations. The taste of the powder mixture of verapamil hydrochloride was evaluated by palatability test. The selected formula were then developing further into fast disintegrating tablet by direct compression method. The excipient used for the formula of fast disintegrating tablet were Avicel PH 102 as filler, talc as glidan, and magnesium stearate as lubricant. The best formulation of fast disintegrating tablet of verapamil hydrochloride found in this study was consist of solid dispersion with sodium starch glycolate as carrier, menthol as flavoring agent, and the mixture of sucralose with mannitol as sweeteners.
