Description
Summary:Acne vulgaris or often known as acne is a dermatological disorder which is commonly occurred on teenagers in puberty. Acnes is commonly caused by infection by Propionibacterium acnes when the sebum is overproduced from the body. This infection disease is often treated by antibiotics that can inhibit or kill Propionibacterium acnes. A common limitation of treatment with antibiotics is the emergence of resistance problems by infectious bacteria so there is a need for alternative therapy for acnes. Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.) is a plant that is used in general for food by the community. Based on previous research, water spinach extract had antimicrobial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of water spinach herbs extract to the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. Water spinach herbs was made to crude drug before extraction. Extraction was conducted by reflux method using three solvents with increasing polarity (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol). Antibacterial activity test of water spinach herbs extract began with disc diffusion method to Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Water spinach herbs extract had better antibacterial activity towards Gram positive bacteria than Gram negative bacteria. Antibacterial test was continued to select the water spinach herbs extract which had the best antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes. The ethanolic water spinach herbs extract had the best antibacterial activity towards Propionibacterium acnes and was followed by testing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). MIC value of ethanolic water spinach herbs extract on Propionibacterium acnes was 12???ã?? ?íð?± ?í± ????????value was ??????ã?mL. The antibacterial activity of ethanolic water spinach herbs extract was also compared against the reference antibiotic tetracycline HCl. The value of equality of tetracycline HCl to ethanolic water spinach herbs extract was ??ã ?±?? ®?®?ð?± ??????±??ð? ?±????????????ã ±?í ???ð® ? ?±???ð? ®í herbs extract. Water spinach herbs extract had the best antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes.
