Summary:Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are antacid drugs that increase pH stomach due to excessive production of stomach acid. These drug used in tablet to eliminate side effect from each other. The aim of this research was to develop a method for determination of aluminium and magnesium in tablet using uv-visible spectrophotometry. The determination of aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide is based on complex forming reactions between Al 3+ ion and Mg 2+ with alizarin red S reagent in a certain pH. The research start by doing preliminary test, reaction optimization, validation and application method. The result showed the composition of reagents for aluminium determination were AMS 9 x 10 -3 % w/v, polyvinylpirolidon K25 1% w/v and acetat buffer pH 4.5 1 M, while reagents composition for determination of magnesium was not determined. The result of method validation shown that the method was linear in over the range of aluminium 1.0 –7.0 µg/mL with correlation coefficient (r) 0.999; the detection limit of the method was 0.2335 µg/mL while the quantization limit was 0.7783 µg/mL. Accuracy of the method recovery was 100.55% ± 0.7335, while intraday and interday precision were shown by relative standard deviation (RSD) < 2%. Based on result of the research, the developed method has validated and can be applied to determine aluminium in tablet and can not be applied to magnesium.
