When puberty, increase hormone production androgen namely testosterone that cause the increase production of sebum. Basically sebum protects the body from outer environment. But when production sebum increased and the pores of the skin closed by dust and dirt, this will trigger bacteria cause acne to thrive. This bacteria will cause inflammatory to the skin. The purpose of therapies for acne is to decrease the production of sebum and eliminate the bacteria. One way to eliminate bacteria is using the antibacterial or known as antibiotics. The first line antibiotics for acne are erythromycin, clindamycin, and tetracycline. But the use of antibacterial has side effects and vulnerable the resistance. Sirih (Piper betle) and senggugu (Clerodendrum serratum) are plants that are often used by the public as a antiseptic for wound. The aim of this study was to test antibacterial activity combination ethanolic extract of both plants against Propionibacterium acnes dan Staphylococcus epidermidis. Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96%. Antibacterial activity of single extract tested with the disk diffusion paper and microdilution. MIC and MBC values of ethanolic extract of sirih leaves were 256 µg/ml and 512 µg/ml, ethanolic extract of senggugu leaves were 4096 µg/ml and 4096 µg/ml against Propionibacterium acnes. While MIC and MBC values of ethanolic extract of sirih leaves were 64 µg/ml and 64 µg/ml, ethanolic extract of senggugu leaves were 256 µg/ml and 512 µg/ml against Staphylococcus epidermidis, for comparison was used tetracycline HCl. Antibacterial activity extract combination was tested with paper tape method, time kill curve, and checkerboard. These three methods showed the same results that combination ethanolic extract of sirih leaves and ethanolic extract of senggugu leaves was additive on both bacteria. text
