INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/44422 The reliability and life time of an organic coating relies on several factors such as paint types and conditions. Likewise, an environment condition and surface preparation standard also possess an important factor before painting process is done. Dry abrasive sand blasting is a popular surface method, which is applied in many ship dockyards and various manufactures. The method is preceded before painting process as anti-corrosion outside layer completed. The abrasiveness surface characteristics of a material as the result of surface preparation using the sand blasting (blast cleaning) method are varied according to the type of abrasive substance, air pressure or type of equipment that used during the blast cleaning process. An experiment to examine and to compare the abrasiveness surface intensity, adhesion (bonding) and organic coating strength have to be done, in order to determine and to provide evidence that Merapi’s volcanic sand can be used as an alternative of sand blasting abrasive media to substitute the silica sand. The sand blasting experiment was conducted by using both of Merapi’s volcanic sand and Lampung’s silica sand as an abrasive media. Furthermore, to discuss and to measure an adhesion effect, each was coated with alkyd/red lead and epoxy/zinc phosphate paint types that exposed in the salt spray chamber for 500 hours. The experiment outcome have shown that the depth profile have reached 62 and 72 ?m, the adhesion experiment using the cross cut method can be categorized as 4B, and the salt spray chamber result have rated number 7 and 9. As conclusion, the sand blasting experiment have provide an evidence that, indeed, Merapi’s volcanic sand can be used as an alternative of sand blasting abrasive media to substitute the silica sand for dry abrasive sand blasting that used for surface preparation and treatment process. text
