LIVELINESS COMPONENTS AT COMMERCIAL STREET SIDEWALKS

Cities need a lively public life. The presence of people whom doing social activities indicate a lively public space, so that experiencing people can occur. This situation happened affected by some qualities that exist in public space.Since shopping has social motives, commercial street sidewalks is a place where those qualities should exist. This study has focus on finding what the most significant qualities or components that shaped liveliness at three commercial street sidewalks, which are sidewalks at jalan Alkateri, jalan Braga and jalan Kepatihan. So, that components become a concern in the next public space design process. Correlational design research become major methods of this study that consist of three kind observation approach. Liveliness observation, social interaction observation and user interview become observation approach of this study. There are four components that shaping liveliness which are; physical comfort, enclosure,staying activity and soft edges. Every components at each sidewalks measured,scored and compared. The result are components that most significant in shaping liveliness at the most lively sidewalks. Meanwhile, social interaction observation and user interview results supporting the result from liveliness observation about the most lively sidewalks among those three. The result is Braga sidewalks is the most lively sidewalks based on three observation approach and the most significant components that shaping liveliness at this sidewalks are enclosure and staying activity. Enclosure that shaped this street corridor is a treasure from Dutch collonialism. They designed jalan Braga as the finest shopping street in this city, just like Parisian streets. Preservation of the many buildings on this street has become unconscious attraction for current public life. Meanwhile, the heart of staying activity components is placed on something that enggage the eyes such as collonial facade buildings, classic design lamps, and good looking people. Average time spent user on this sidewalk is two times higher than two others. Preservation become the classic tools to reach lively public life in this study.
