However, science centers in Indonesia are mostly lacking on these experiences, where visitors are distributed inside an exhibition hall without any design considerations which cannot help visitors to understand clearly the technologies presented by interactive means. To design a science center that responds to visitors‘ experience, environmental psychology approach is needed. This includes Attention Restoration Theory and Preference Theory by Kaplan. Attention Restoration Theory gives design criterias which allow visitors to gain focus effortlessly towards the exhibits, therefore visitors can grasp the science behind the exhibits easily. Preference Theory gives design criterias which affect visitors‘ perception. It allows visitors to experience different varieties of moods. There are several sub-theories which also helps the detail of the design, such as color psychology, lighting, and circulation. Design concepts that helps with visitors‘ experience then emerge from the theories. Attention towards sequences, exhibiton planning, atmosphere in each rooms, and the building image are important in the design process. By following each concepts which are gained, the design should be able to enrich visitors‘ experience and avoid any monotonous impressions. These foundings also allow restoration and preference theory to not only be used in healing architecture, but also in designs which are in need of interactive elements such as science centers and other exhibition buildings text |

Science centers have an informal role in educating people about science and
technology in fun experiences. However, science centers in Indonesia are mostly
lacking on these experiences, where visitors are distributed inside an exhibition
hall without any design considerations which cannot help visitors to understand
clearly the technologies presented by interactive means.
To design a science center that responds to visitors‘ experience, environmental
psychology approach is needed. This includes Attention Restoration Theory and
Preference Theory by Kaplan. Attention Restoration Theory gives design criterias
which allow visitors to gain focus effortlessly towards the exhibits, therefore
visitors can grasp the science behind the exhibits easily. Preference Theory gives
design criterias which affect visitors‘ perception. It allows visitors to experience
different varieties of moods. There are several sub-theories which also helps the
detail of the design, such as color psychology, lighting, and circulation.
Design concepts that helps with visitors‘ experience then emerge from the
theories. Attention towards sequences, exhibiton planning, atmosphere in each
rooms, and the building image are important in the design process. By following
each concepts which are gained, the design should be able to enrich visitors‘
experience and avoid any monotonous impressions. These foundings also allow
restoration and preference theory to not only be used in healing architecture, but
also in designs which are in need of interactive elements such as science centers
and other exhibition buildings |
