Summary: | The sun is the source of energy for all living things on earth. However, overexposure to ultraviolet
radiation of sunlight can cause harmful effect to skin. Sunscreen has the ability to provide
protection to the skin from ultraviolet radiation by absorbing or reflecting UV rays on the skin.
The ability of sunscreen blocking ultraviolet is expressed as Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value. SPF
is defined as the ratio of the amount of energy necessary to produce a minimal erythema dose
(MED) on skin covered by sunscreen, compared to the amount of energy necessary to produce
MED on unprotected skin. Bran is a fine powder that coats the grains in rice. Rice bran oil is an
extraction result of bran and germ. Bran contains !-oryzanol constituent which serves as
sunscreen agent since it has the ability to protect ultraviolet radiation as chemical absorber. The
purpose of this research is to create sunscreen formulation from rice bran oil, perform skin
irritation test, and determine the SPF value applied to rabbit’s back skin. Optimization begins by
determining the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value. The result was 9.3. Formulation of
sunscreen cream was optimize using various composition ratio of emulsifier concentration,
viscosity enhancer agent, and rice bran oil concentration. Cream formulation that meets the
specification consists of 3% rice bran oil, 10% vaseline album, 10% liquid paraffin, 7% cetostearyl
alcohol, 5,09% Span 80, 3,91% Tween 40 and 60,7% aquadest. Cream evaluation included
organoleptic, pH, viscosity, stability, irritation test and set SPF value applied to rabbit’s back skin.
The result of skin irritation test is negative. The minimal erythema dose (MED) of unprotected skin
is 1,494 J/cm
2
. The formula had SPF value of 3,37.
