Chitosan is known to have a broad antibacterial activity, and so is salicylic acid (SA) with additional activity as a comedolytic. Salicylic acid has a low solubility in water, and there for, it is required higher concentrations to inhibit the growth of bacteria. The aims of this study was to prepare a complex between LMW of chitosan and SA to increase its solubility and skin penetration. The degree of complex formation and skin permeation enhancer by chitosan will be improved when it is protonated. Lactic acid and glycolic acid were optimized as solvent to improve chitosan protonation and the ratio of chitosan to SA were also varied. The results obtained were dried and characterized by the efficiency of complex formation, FTIR spectra, and morphology using SEM. The complex was tested for antibacteria activity and stability during storage. The chitosan-SA complex showed higher antibacterial activity compared to chitosan and SA its selves, FTIR data proved that the complex reaction was occured because of hydrogen bonding between the SA and chitosan. text |
