Hair loss is a part of the hair growth cycle and it is affected by anagen and telogen phase ratio. Stress, nutritional deficiencies, medicines, and androgen hormone that inhibit the hair growth can lead alopecia. Various types of plants included Jamaica Cherry (Muntingia calabura L.) are reported can promote hair growth activity. The aim of this research is to develop a formula of cherry leaf extract shampoo and to evaluate its hair growth activity in mice. Extract was prepared by reflux method using ethanol 95%. The material consisted of Natrium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Natrium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES), cocamidopropyl betaine, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), cetostearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, diNatrium edetate, Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT), cherry leaf extract, and aquadest. Formulation of shampoo was optimize using various composition ratio of surfactant concentration, viscosity enhancer agent, humectant concentration, and cherry leaf extract concentration. The prepared formulation was evaluated for its organoleptic, pH, viscosity, surface tension, percent of solid content, detergency ability, stability test, ocular irritation test, and hair growth activity test in Swiss Webster mice. Alopecia induction was using testosterone administration (10mg/kg) subcutaneously. The length and the weight of hairs was measured 21 days after application of shampoo. The result showed that the optimum formula of shampoo was formula F55, contained 20% SLS; 5% cocamidopropyl betaine; 8% VCO; 5% cetostearyl alcohol; 2% propylene glycol; 0,05% diNatrium edetate; 0,1% BHT; 3% cherry leaf extract; and 56,85% aquadest. The ocular irritation classification of formula F55 was mild irritant (2B). Shampoo F55 revealed hair growth activity comparable to standard (minoxidil 5%). text
