Anadara granosa shell contains of 95-99% calcium carbonate wich can be used an abrasive agent in a toothpaste. Abrasive agent is one of the main components of a toothpaste and useful to clean the debris on the surface of the teeth. This research aims to develop the formula of toothpaste Anadara granosa shell powder and evaluate the cleaning ability. Anadara granosa shell size reduction was gradually accomplished using a mortar and pestle, mortar grinder, and tumbler ball mill with a speed of 75 rpm for 60 minutes to obtain a powder with a particle size of 5-20 µm. To obtain the nano-sized, the powder was continue grinded with a planetary ball mill at a speed of 400 rpm for 10 minutes. The size of powder after planetary ball mill grinding was 355,7 ± 38,45 nm with a polydispersity index 0,26 ± 0,08. The formula developed based on optimizing the type and amount of binder, surfactant, and abrasive agent. The formula had evaluated including to organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, foam height, cleaning ability with score debris determination and moisture content and stability test for the final formula. In this research, the optimum formula of toothpaste Anadara granosa shell powder consisted of 40% Anadara granosa shell powder, 1,5% xhantan gum, 2% sodium lauryl sulfate, 1% menthol, 15% glycerol, 7,5% propylene glycol, 0,2 % sodium saccharin, 0,01% dye (apple green powder), 0,18% methyl paraben and 0,02% propyl paraben. The cleaning ability of both toothpaste containing 40 % micro and nano-sized Anadara granosa shell powder included in the excellent category with debris score was 0. The cleaning ability of toothpaste micro and nano-sized Anadara granosa shell powder was better than toothpaste calcium carbonate with the debris score 0.5. text
