Therefore, Bekasi has the potential to be a precedent to other cities which starts the establishment of “new generation” libraries in Indonesia. The inssuficiency of the current Bekasi Public Library itself gives a strong cause for this design project. This project was built on a site of ± 8.100 m2 located on Ahmad Yani Street, Bekasi. It consists of several functions, such as: library, visitor service, material processing, public and commercial facilities, building services, and parking. It is a five-stories building with a total area of ± 5.900 m2. “Living room of the city” is the chosen general design concept of this library. Bekasi Public Library was designed as an informal and comfortable space for the visitors, especially the city’s residents. This public library accomodates various types of both individual and group activites. The design concept was based on three main issues, such as flexibility, visual comfort, and image of the building. To create flexibility, “no-barrier rooms” concept was implemented by minimizing the use of solid walls as room dividers. The library was divided into different types of areas to aid all kinds of reading or non-reading activities. The visual comfort aspect was achieved by creating an atrium in the middle of the building. The image of modernity and attractiveness were attained by modifying the simple mass of the building to create a more dynamic form, as well as designing a unique entrance as a focal point. The site was designed with pedestrian circulation as the main focus. Vehicle circulation and parking were designed as efficiently as possible. text |

Bekasi is a satellite city of Jakarta, which has a rapid economic and commerce growth, as well
as a large population of students. Therefore, Bekasi has the potential to be a precedent to other
cities which starts the establishment of “new generation” libraries in Indonesia. The inssuficiency
of the current Bekasi Public Library itself gives a strong cause for this design project. This project
was built on a site of ± 8.100 m2 located on Ahmad Yani Street, Bekasi. It consists of several
functions, such as: library, visitor service, material processing, public and commercial facilities,
building services, and parking. It is a five-stories building with a total area of ± 5.900 m2.
“Living room of the city” is the chosen general design concept of this library. Bekasi Public
Library was designed as an informal and comfortable space for the visitors, especially the city’s
