RELIGIOUS VALUES AS A GUIDANCE FOR DEVELOPMENT IN LOCAL ECONOMIC: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON BOTH FARMER GROUPS OF PESANTREN AL ITTIFAQ AND CISONDARI IN BANDUNG DISTRICT

The basic concept of development is a change for better. Likewise, it requires a change of paradigm in the current national development process. A change of paradigm requires agents in order to succeed. History noted that religion is regarded as the most notable agent of change. Any religions in the world has revealed that its rising was a blessing and promising for a better change in the society. It occurred when Islam emerge in Arabian land. Muhammad Prophet as a prominent leader and Al Quran as a fundamental source, Islam made major changes in Arab society. Al Qur'an brought a great deal of new strict rules and laid the foundations of a new civilization. Similarly, the Catholic also has a guidance of a way of life issued by their supreme leader, the Pope. The guidance book is well documented as Encyclical Document in Vatican. Those Encyclical documents contained a number of mandate from The Pope to stand up for the poor, vulnerable and marginalized people. There is a worthy of note phenomenon in the Ciburial village, Alamendah, Rancabali, District of Bandung. There is a Pondok Pesantren (an Islamic boarding school) named Al Ittifaq that simultaneously develop entrepreneurship in agriculture. Agriculture became the main livelihood of the pesantren and the local communities around it. In the nearby village, there is Cisondari village which has similar livelihood to Alamendah. The local people evolved an agriculture entrepreneurship which is supported by Melania Credit Union who indirectly related to Catholic network in Bandung. This study aims to learn and explore how significant role of the two institutions on the economic development in both societies and aspects that affected a change in either group. Based on the study, authors conclude that religious values have a notable influence on economic development in both villages. The aspects that drove the iv changes are the leadership figure in both institutions, self-sustain encouragement, and the cooperative itself as financial institution that professionally managed. Kiai Fuad as the leader of moslem society in Ciburial considered as capable of translating the doctrines of Islam into something more contextual and able to answer the problems of society at that time. Kiai Fuad has a legitimation to refer Al Quran to his people. Meanwhile, Melania Credit Union is a minority in Cisondari has a role as financial institution that manages funds farmers, Melania does not have the same legitimacy as Al Ittifaq because most farmers in Cisondari are Muslims, while Melania established by Catholics. However, their activities is a manifest of the Encyclical Document of Pope in Vatican. Therefore,
