Description
Summary:Significant architectural involvement in programs to improve urban slums in Southeast Asian cities has emerged since the late 2000s. Re-formulation of the architect profession in development is needed, because less attention is given to the practice of architects for low-income people. In the case of Indonesia, the involvement was driven by the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI). This involvement was included in the program to increase the urban slum called ‘Kampung Tematik’ which was carried out by the Semarang City Government. The program aims to improve the quality of life of the urban poor, improve basic housing infrastructure and encourage the local economy as an influence of regional development. This study aims to position the role of architects in the practice of increasing slum areas, known as community architects. Collaborative planning theory is used as a lens of analysis to explore how institutions interact and engage with other actors, impose their roles in the negotiation process and build participation in collaborative processes. Thus, through literature studies and case studies there is a potential for the development of architectural professions through collaboration with the government in policies and programs to improve urban slums in the Indonesian context.
