will examine the changes in Sea Surface Height Anomaly (SSHA) on Indonesian
Throughflow strip in the eastern Indonesia waters, seen from the semi-annual variations,
seasonal, inter-annual and decadal (period 8-12 years). The data used is Sea Surface Height
Anomaly (SSHA) monthly result of a combination of several satellite altimetry from AVISO.
The range of data used is 23 years from January 1993 to December 2015. Data were
processed in Hovmöller charts, energy spectrum, and climatological charts (monthly
average).
Based on the results of the study, there are significant seasonal variations to changes
SSHA. During west monsoon (December to February), increase SSHA 5 cm to 15 cm in the
study area. East monsoon (June to August) decrease SSHA between 0 cm to -10 cm. Semiannual
variation SSHA is so small that the effect is hardly noticeable. Inter-annual
variations SSHA influenced by ENSO and DM. During strong El Niño and DM (+) in 1997-
1998 decrease SSHA from -10 cm to -15 cm. During strong La Niña in 2010 – 2011 increase
SSHA 5 cm to 7.5 cm than the average SSHA during west monsoon. In addition there are
decadal variations (period 8-12 years) changes SSHA with a smaller influence. The results
of Hovmöller charts shows that the influence of Inter-annual variations and decadal
variations (period 8-12 years) can strengthen or weaken the effect of seasonal variations to
changes SSHA. During mild or weak El Niño (La Niña), it will increase the impact of east
monsoon (west monsoon) and decrease the impact of west monsoon (east monsoon) to
changes SSHA in eastern Indonesian waters. |
