<b></i>Abstract : </b><i><p align=\"justify\"> <br /> From historical urban development point of view, Denpasar in its very beginning was a Kingdom city which was organized under cultural system based on local religion (i.e Hindu). It was this cultural system, which had become a tradition of customs, who arranged its spatial arrangement and its social relationship as well. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> The Kingdom city consist of some traditional communities called Desa idats as units of arrangement area. A Desa Adat covers some Baniars, that are the smaller units within the territory of the traditional community ( the Desa Adat),where its physical arrangement and social relationships organized by a living cultural system. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> Because of its multiple fungtions - i.g. as the capital of the Province of Bali and Badung Regency as well, the center of local government, the center of local trading bussines, the center of educational activities, the city of tourism and many other imfortant fungtion - Denpasar had been developed rapidly. This development needs urban facilities within an area which is spatially limited. Hence, it has caused changes on the city\'s physical and social arrangement, from cultural as its origin into a modern one. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> The Baniar, as a part of Denpasar Municipality, has unavoidably affected, whether physically or socially, by the above mentioned urban development. However, the (old) Baniars remain exist living along with a new Banjars. By observing the city\'s activities and development, there could be typologies of Baniars within urban activities, Banjars located in enclave areas, and Baniars situated in the fringes of the city, whether they are old ( or ancient) or new. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> This research is directed to observe and analyse the changes taken place in each of those typologies of Baniars and their roles, by comparing the existing realisties and the peoples opinions to the concept of traditional environmental arrangement as well as to the concept of urban and modern community. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> The result of this research will show the existing changes and the roles of urban Banjars in Bali, especially those located in the Municipality of Denpasar, as well as Banjar appropriately to be developed in the cities of Bali under the concept of modern community. Furthermore, a policy approach could be made by taking into account and based on the results of this study.
