Summary: | Bamboo violin has a unique sound quality that differs perceptually from common
wooden violin. This research is focused on finding the physical parameters in
order to get plausible explanations on that sound difference by conducting vibroacoustic
analysis based on the results from physical experiment and numerical
calculation (simulation). An automatic bow-moving machine was developed to
provide a highly repeatable bowing strokes upon a string. A piezoelectric was put
on the violin resonator surfaces for recording excitation force of bridge.
Meanwhile, a microphone was put 50 cm from the resonator (soundbox) for
recording sound pressure level produced by the violin. The measurement of both
units was done simultaneously and then a transfer function was defined from the
ratio of the units. For numerical calculation approach, only the violin’s body was
considered. Using isotropic material parameters both bamboo’s and wooden’s
resonator then simulated. From the result of experiment, it was found that bamboo
and wooden violin have different output/input ratio, with the most different
occured on the striking of D4 string. Further findings could be depicted from the
resonator’s transfer function which resulting shifts in frequencies with different
amplitudes. The result of numerical simulation showed lesser eigenfrequencies
density of bamboo violin compared to wooden violin. The modes shape between
the bamboo violin and the wooden violin were also different. These results could
be the indicators hinting the differences between the sound of bamboo and
wooden violin. |
