Description
Summary:Formaldehyde is a permitted preservative in wet wipes product up to 2000 ppm. The concentration of formaldehyde up to 500 ppm in this product needs no label declaration. To quantify formaldehyde in this product, a valid analytical method is necessary. The aim of this research was to obtain an analytical method for determination of formaldehyde in wet wipes product by means of visible spectrophotometry. Formaldehyde was reacted with chromotropic acid to form purple-colored solution measurable at 578 nm. Some parameters of validation such as linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy were tested. Prior determination, samples were soaked in aquadest at 40 ?C, cooled, and filtered using Buchner funnel and the filtrate was then reacted with chromotropic acid reagent. The method gave a linear calibration curve in the range of 1-9 µg/mL with an equation of Y= 0.0452 X + 0.0089 and correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9997. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of this method were 0.14 and 0.42 µg/mL, respectively. Coefficient of variation (CV) of intra-day determination at the concentration level of 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, and 6.0 ug/mL were 1.32 to 4.07 %, while those of inter-day determination were 2.60 to 4.73 %. The recovery of the method at the concentration level of 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 4.8, 6.0, and 7.2 µg/mL were 97.47 to 104.92 %. Ten samples of commercial wipes products were tested and only one sample contains formaldehyde at the concentration level of 510.36 ppm. Based on overall results, it was concluded that the method for determination of formaldehyde in wet wipes product was successfully obtained.
