Description
Summary:Diabetes melitus (DM) is a kind of disease which is commonly found in this century. Currently, an alternative therapy for diabetes mellitus type two used which is commonly used by many people is by using herbal medicine. Pluchea indica L. (Beluntas) is a plant which is regularly found in our society and can be used as a traditional medicine in Indonesia. This research aims is to test the anti-diabetic activity of ethanol extract of beluntas leaves which is presumed have the ability to lowered blood sugar level. Beluntas leaves extraction was done by using Soxhlet method with 96% ethanol as solvent. Male Swiss Webster mice were made diabetic by giving alloxan monohydrate (60 mg/kg bw) intravenously. Two doses ethanol extract of beluntas leaves were tested in this research, low dose extract (280 mg/kg bw) and high dose extract (560 mg/kg bw). The fasting glucose level was measured before the animals was induced (H0), seven days after the animals was induced, on the 3rd day (H3), 7th day (H7), 14th day (H14), and 21st day (H21) after the ethanolic extract of beluntas leaves was given. Result showed that both doses of beluntas leaves ethanolic extract can provide the significant (p<0.01) decrease of blood sugar level, starting from the 14th day. At low dose (280 mg/kg bw) the extract has able to reduce blood glucose level 53.2% on DM with blood glucose level <328 mg/dL and 47.5% on DM with blood glucose level >442 mg/dL.
