Description
Summary:Obesity is a condition characterized by the presence of excess fat tissue. Traditionally, madeiravine leaves and sow thistle leaves used by communities to treat obesity. This study was conducted to determine antiobesity activity of ethanol extract of sow thistle leaves and its combination with ethanol extract of madeiravine leaves. Antiobesity test performed in vivo assay toward obese male Wistar rats. A total of 28 rats were divided into seven groups: normal, control, orlistat 21,6 mg/kg bw, B100 (madeiravine leaves extract 100 mg/kg bw), T100 (sow thistle leaves extract 100 mg/kg bw), B50+T50 (combination of madeiravine leaves extract 50 mg/kg bw and sow thistle leaves extract 50 mg/kg bw), and B100+T100 (combination of madeiravine leaves extract 100 mg/kg bw and sow thistle leaves extract 100 mg/kg bw). All group except the normal group was induced by high-carbohydrate diet food for 42 days. Then, for the next 14 days, all group except the normal and control were given the test substances together with high-carbohydrate diet food. Daily weight, food index, feses index, cholesterol level and tryglyceride level was measured to evaluate the antiobesity activity. There were significant differences (p<0.05) on group B100, T100, B50+T50, and B100+T100 compared to control group in percentage of the weight gain and tryglyceride level. Combination of madeiravine leaves extract 50 mg/kg bw and sow thistle leaves extract 50 mg/kg bw showed the best antiobesity activity in this study.
