Description
Summary:A careful nutritional assessment is essential for improvement of comprehensive treatment plans, especially for elderly population with hypertension in Indonesia. The aim of this study was accomplished to observe and evaluate the relationship between nutritional status and outcome of treatment in elderly patients with hypertension who used antihypertensive drugs, calcium channel blockers (CCB). This research was a descriptive-observational study which was conducted concurrently and retrospectively on two primary health care facilities, including Puskesmas Puter and Puskesmas Ibrahim Adjie in Bandung, using medical records and interviews to patients. The relationship between nutritional status and outcome therapy was analysed statistically with independent t-student methods. Possible adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of CCB were analysed descriptively. In addition, educational brochures and counseling were given to patients. Total samples were 257 patients dominated by women (69.65%), diagnosed with stage 2 hypertension (39.69%) and myalgia (31.52%) as the most common comorbid. The results showed that there was a significant difference in reduction of systolic blood pressure between those nutritional status groups at the 0.05 significance level. The average decrease in systolic and diastolic at the group at risk of malnutrition and malnutrition was larger than in patients with normal nutrition group, leading to the possibility of drug toxicity condition. Suspected ADRs of CCB occured higher in patients with at risk of malnutrition and malnutrition status group. Dizziness (46.69%) was the most frequent of ADRs. Thus, it is necessary to control effectively the use of CCB, especially in patients who are at risk of malnutrition or malnutrition.
