The plantation area and production of palm oil in Indonesia is increasing every year. Increasing production of palm oil causes an increase of palm oil waste production. Palm oil waste can be used as raw material to make high added value products. One of such product that can be made from oil palm biomass is graphene.
Graphene is a two-dimensional sp2 bonded carbon nanostructure packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice. Graphene has high theoretical surface area and high electrical conductivity, promising applications as electrode for supercapacitor. There are many methods to produce graphene, such as mechanical exfoliation using scocth tape, reduction of graphene oxide, and chemical vapor deposition. An alternative simple method to produce graphene is pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of organic material in lack of oxygen. This research is focused on hydrophilization of graphene production from palm oil waste using FeCl3 as catalyst and ZnCl2 as activating agent. The pyrolysis is carried out in two stages, the first stage was at 350°C followed by the second stage at 900°C.
This research has confirmed that cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is able to increase the hydrophilicity of graphene from EFB and PKS. Water contact angle of graphene (55o) decreased to 26o after hydrophilization, but specific capacitance decreases from 43.87 F g-1 to 11.91 F g-1 after CTAB addition.
