Description
Summary:The imbalance between defensive factors and aggressive factor in the stomach cause ulcers or sores. One of the main cause of is the use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs such as asetosal in high doses. Turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val) is a plant that is widely spread in Southeast Asia and commonly used for broad range purposes. According to the former study, the content of curcumin in turmeric show antiulcer activity as well as gastroprotective effect on the gastric mucosa. Propolis is a resinous hive products collected by bees from the plants. The popularity increases as an alternative or additional health over the world, including in America, Europe and Japan. Previous research proved that propolis possessed antiulcer activity. The combination of both extract is expected to have a better antiulcer effect. This study aimed to determine antiulcer activity of turmeric extract with propolis extract in combination. Activity is determined by testing extract combination pre-clinically using asetosal-induced model. The lession number and severity of ulcer were determined through macroscopic and microscopic observation. In the group receiving turmeric extract 100 mg/kg bw and propolis 100 mg / kg bw showed a significant difference in quantity and severity of the lesions compared to the control group (p <0.05). a group the number of turmeric 100 mg / kg bw and propolis 50 mg / kg bw also represented a remarkable difference compared to that of the control group (p <0.05). There are significant difference between both doses groups and turmeric 100 mg/kg bw as well as propolis 100 mg/kg bw extract respectively (p <0.05). In conclusion, the effect of extracts in combination has antiulcer effect better than either turmeric or propolis.
