Summary: | In 2012, CVDs cause 17.5 million deaths in the world. An estimated 52% of the deaths are caused
by coronary heart disease (CHD). Myocardial infarction is caused by vascular blockade due to
atheroma plaque. Recent studies indicated the antihyperlipemic, antiinflammatory, and
cardioprotective effect of sunti rhizome. Therefore sunti rhizome was hypothesized to affect the
cytokines profile. This study aimed to evaluate the cardioprotective effect of sunti rhizome in
atherosclerosis and isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction rats through the serum lipids and
cytokines profile. Male rats were induced by high cholesterol diets, pure cholesterol at dose of 100
mg/kg bw, cholic acid at dose of 200 mg/kg bw, and propylthiouracil (PTU) at dose of 12.5 mg/kg
bw. At month 3, rats were treated with sunti rhizome ethanol extract at dose of 400 kg/kg orally
and then the rats were induced by isoproterenol at dose of 150 mg/kg bw intraperitoneally at the
end of month 3. Serum were collected at the beginning of experiment, then at the end of month 1,
month 2, and month 3 for biochemical analysis. The administration of sunti rhizome ethanol extract
at dose of 400 mg/kg bw showed significant differences (p<0.1) between dyslipidemia-infarctionsunti group and dyslipidemia-infarction group on triglyceride, AIP, and IL-10 level, and showed a
significant difference between dyslipidemia-infarction-sunti group and dyslipidemia group on HDL
level. This experiment showed that sunti rhizome etanol extract could reduce the level of
triglyceride (40.40%) and atherogenic index plasma (27.46%), and could increase the level of IL-10
(80.36%) and HDL-C (39.33%). In conclusion, the administration of sunti rhizome etanol extract at
dose of 400 mg/kg bw showed cardioprotective effect by reducing cardiovascular risk through
increasing the HDL-C level and lowering the triglyceride level, and by increasing IL-10 level.
