Description
Summary:RESINS EXTRACTION OF NYAMPLUNG SEED Nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum Linn.) is one of the most potential mangrove plants in Indonesia and has a high resistance to the environment. Nyamplung has productivity up to 20 tons of fruit/ha/year with an oil and resin content of around 74,70%. So far, the utilization of nyamplung still focuses on the use of nyamplung seeds for the manufacture of biodiesel while the resin has not been widely used and tends to be produced as waste because of its toxic nature. Resin is one of nyamplung’s products that can be obtained from nyamplung seed extraction which has a high potential to 367,632 kg resin/year. This study aims to determine the effect of the process’s variables on the acquisition of nyamplung seed resin. There are four stages of the process in this study, namely raw material preparation, extraction process, product separation and purification, and product analysis. The main focus of this research is on the extraction process. At this stage of the process extraction will be carried out using soxhlet with two types of solvents (methanol–n-hexane; ethanol–n-hexane) with variations in the form of alcohol to n-hexane ratio (pure alcohol; 3; 2; 1,25; and pure n-hexane) which lasts for 4 hours with a stirring speed of 500 rpm, a fixed heating rate (290oC) and room pressure. Nyamplung seed resin obtained is characterized by determining the acquisition of resin, acid number and determination of resin type. While the oil is characterized by determining the acquisition and acid number. According to this research, the highest resin acquisition of 34,75% (weight basis of seeds) was produced from the ethanol–n-hexane extraction with ethanol to n-hexane ratio of 1,25. The highest resin acid value of 147,59 mg KOH/g was obtained in the extraction of methanol–n-hexane with methanol to n-hexane ratio of 3. While the highest oil acquisition 56,12% (weight basis of seeds) with acid number 56,61 mg KOH/g was produced from the extraction process using pure n-hexane. The type of resin obtained from nyamplung seeds is comparable to rosin resin.
