The experiment was performed by injecting subcutaneously 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 mg/kg b.w. of PGF2, dissolved in 0.4 ml saline, daily for 11 consecutive days. Control animals were injected with saline only. The results showed that among the reproductive organs, only the epididymis were significantly decreased in weight while testis, prostate gland and seminal vesicle were not influenced. These data indicated that physiological processes of the testis were not influenced. The reduction in weight of the epididymis tend to be caused by a decreased in diameter and wall thickness of the caudal epididymal duct when compared to the caput and corpus part. There were no differences observed in the sperm concentration between control and rats treated with 1.5 and 2 mg/kg b.w. In contrast, sperm concentration of rats treated with 3 mg/kg b.w. PGF2a was increased. Sperm motility and number of normal sperms decreased in conjunction with the increasing dosage of PGF2a. In the caudal epididymis, the number of decapitated sperms were higher than abnormal sperms. There were no differences in mating ability of the treated rats compared to control rats. The fertility index of rats treated with 2 and 3 mg/kg b.w. PGF2a was significantly lower than the control and rats treated with 1.5 mg/kg b.w. PGF2a. After 14 days treatment of PGF2a, fertility of the male rats were not yet recovered. It could be concluded that in the male rats, PGF2a affects the caudal part of the epididymis and as a consequence fertility decreased.<p align=\"justify\"> text |
