Summary: | Using material balance equation (MBE) model, the performance of CO2 huff-n-puff injection is evaluated. MBE model brings simplicity in its calculation, while still giving indicative results. The result is then used for redesigning the CO2 huff-n-puff injection in “M” field, Indonesia by evaluating its existing performance, to later propose a more optimized injection design.
The MBE model is developed by first deriving the equation, taking into account the classic MBE and several equations incorporating the CO2-reservoir fluid interaction. The result is an extended MBE that can be used for CO2 injection, including huff-n-puff injection. The MBE is then constructed in a spreadsheet to allow calculation of the input data to bring about results that can be used to evaluate the performance of the CO2 huff-n-puff injection. Later on, to improve performance of the existing condition, the CO2 huff-n-puff injection is redesigned by proposing improved CO2 injection pattern and injected CO2 concentration.
Increase in CO2 huff-n-puff injection performance is observed after the redesign has been conducted. The improved CO2 huff-n-puff injection design yields an overall more favorable dissolved CO2 in oil profile over the injection time, evidenced by a relatively high percentage of cumulative CO2 volume dissolved in oil to cumulative injected CO2 volume. Conversely, an overall lower level of CO2 as free gas over the injection time is obtained, evidenced by a relatively low percentage of cumulative immiscible free CO2 volume to cumulative injected CO2 volume. This study shows not only that MBE model is applicable for CO2 huff-n-puff injection performance evaluation, but it can further be utilized to redesign an existing CO2 huff-n-puff injection.
