Description
Summary:Abstract:

The research was aimed to study the effects of kencur (Kaemoferia galantta L.) extract on the success of pregnancy and prenatal development of Swiss Webster albino mice. The kencur extract was suspended in 1.5 % CMC(carboxymehtylcellulose) in distilled water.

A concentratration of 100.000 ppm was given by gavage 0.3 ml/mice to the pregnant mice on day 0 to 10 of pregnancy (experiment I) and on day 6 to 14 of pregnancy (experiment II). Control mice were treated with 1.5 % CMC only. The pregnant mice were then sacrificed on day 18 of pregnancy and dissected. The total number of live and dead fetuses, resorbed embryos, implantation, corpora lutea, and preimplantation loss were assessed. Besides, the external, internal, skeletal malformations and the body weight of the
fetuses were observed. Our data showed that the
intrauterine death, mainly as resorbed embryos, tended to increase. In experiment I the kencur extract increased preimplantation loss and hypoplastic kidney significantly. The incidence of liver and kidney hemorrhages were highly significantly increased.Ossification delays were significantly increased in the cervical vertebral bodies. Skeletal malformation was found as rudimentary sternebrae. In experiment II total live fetuses decreased significantly. Defects of the internal organs which increased significantly were ectopic kidney and hydrocephalus. Therefore, it is concluded that kencur extract is embryotoxic, lightly teratogenic and is able to cause physiological abnormality such as hemorrhage of the liver and kidney.
