Description
Summary:This project is a design of a funerary complex which functions as a funeral home, crematorium, columbarium, and cemetery. It is fictitious, initiated by Heaven Funeral Service Solution and is located at Tarumajaya District, Bekasi Regency. The site is located by the Java Sea, which then becomes the design’s main potential. The main goal of this design is to create a contemplative funerary complex as a response to the existing condition of Indonesia’s funeral place, which is unmaintained and poorly designed that it creates a bad image of funeral, sprecifically to the Indonesians themselves. In order to achieve that, this project is design poetically, by putting into consideration the people and their spatial experiences in the design process. Because of that, this project mainly focuses on the serial vision. The serial vision is the sequential spatial experiences by the users being at particular rooms and at the transitions in-between the rooms. The spatial qualities of each sequence are designated to bring particular emotions to the users. The use of the name "The Last Retreat" is based on the reason that this funerary complex is designed to create a private and comfortable, almost home-like, atmosphere. Ultimately, this project is envisioned to be able to challenge the status quo of existing funeral place in Indonesia which seems eery, unmaintained and uncomfortable, and to bring a new image of tranquility, peacefulness, and contmplativeness. Because essentially, a funeral place is the last place of rest for a human ? the last retreat.
