ISOLATION OF CHEMICAL COMPOUND OF SIDAWAYAH FLOWER (Woodfordia floribunda Salisb.) : QUERCETIN AND GALLIC ACID
The secondary plant compounds can be divided into three main categories : alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolics. Phenolic compounds are further divided into subgroups, such as flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids. Woodfordia floribunda Salisb. plant has a local name sidawayah (Java), which is a...

Woodfordia floribunda Salisb. plant has a local name sidawayah (Java), which is also spread in Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Java, Madura, Sumbawa and Timor. It belong to the family Lythraceae. This plant are widely used in India as a traditional medicine such as anthelmintic, toothache, leucorrhoea, menorrhagia and rheumatism. This plant used as a astringent to treat dysentery and sprue. Some research showed biological avtivity of the plant as a wound healing, antiinflammatory and analgesic, hepatoprotector, antioxidants and gout. The objectives of this study were to isolate flavonoid of sidawayah in Indonesia. Method : Isolation was done by series of stages, namely extraction, fractionation, separation, purification. Characterization and elucidation was done by combination of spectrometry methods. Result : Ethanolic extract were brownish, the rendemen was 63%. The ethanolic extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction to obtain fraction. Ethyl acetate fraction was separated by combination of chromatography method until the crystal was formed. Recrystallization was done by ethyl acetate to obtain 5 mg isolate [1]. Recrystallization was done by acetone to obtain 30 mg isolate [2]. Purification was tested by two dimentional thin layer chromatography and it showed only one spot. Based on the elucidation process, it was conclude that isolate [1] was quercetin and isolate [2] was gallic acid. text |
