Description
Summary:Alopecia androgenetic is the baldness due to the high level of testosterone in the body and commonly happen in male. Testosterone is metabolized become dihydrotestosterone and affect the hair loss due to miniaturization of hair follicle. Besides used as cleaning agent for hair and scalp, shampoo also commonly formulated to prevent hair loss and dandruff. Orange is one of the common fruits that can be easily found in Indonesia and has a lot of benefits. Mandarin orange oil consists of d-limonene, a substance that acts as antiandrogen, which can increase hair growth. The purpose of this research is to make a shampoo using mandarin orange oil. The shampoo will be used as hair grower for men who suffer alopecia androgenetic. The formulation was made by optimizing the concentration of sodium lauryl ether sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine as the surfactant and the concentration of sodium chloride as the viscosity enhancer. Some evaluations such as organoleptic characteristics (color, odor, and phase separation), determination of pH and viscosity, foam height, and physical stability test by centrifugation were done to obtain the best formula. The evaluations for the final formulation is organoleptic characteristics, determination of pH and viscosity, surface tension measurement, foaming ability and stability, determination of solid contents, cleaning action, physical stability test by centrifugation and freeze-thaw test, accelerated stability test, and ocular irritation test. Furthermore the hair growth test of the shampoo was conducted in vivo using alopecia androgenetic mice. The evaluation of hair growth was conducted by the measurement of mice’s hair length and hair weight. The mandarin orange oil shampoo consists of 24% sodium lauryl ether sulfate, 6% cocamidopropyl betaine, 1.5% sodium chloride, 1% propylene glycol, 0.1% disodium edetate showed a relatively good stability by the accelerated stability test and physical stability test. The yellowish shampoo with citrus flavor showed no phase separation and did not irritate the eyes of albino rabbits. Based on in vivo hair growth test, there is significant difference (p<0.05) between positive control group and shampoo with active agent group and there is no significant difference (p>0.05) between standard group and shampoo with active agent. The mandarin oil shampoo which formulated in this research increasing hair growth significantly.
